Was in Brooklyn. I6 4WD with a plow and with 140k miles.... Except the odo reads 153k. The frame is.. See for yourself. The body is pretty rough too... I couldn't get it to shift out of 4Lo (put it in neutral and what not). Brakes were scary and went to the floor. And he was asking $3k. Nope.

Yeah that frame looks a bit scaley but not dangerously so. The body is pretty bad. I’d say that’s a $1500 or $2k truck at best.

$3K.   That makes zero sense. I mean, I haven’t perused the Brooklyn market, but that can’t match comps in the area, can it?

If the plow is included, than maybe it’s close in price.  As a plow truck, assuming the transfer case can be made to work, than I’ve seen worse rust.  As a DD, no fucking way.

I’ve owned 5 of these old 80-96 ford trucks and live in a rust belt state too. Never buy a plow truck - ever.

They spend their life abused, transmissions are usually trash and they’re covered in rust worse  than most.

The drivetrain is solid and they’re pretty simple. Major problem are rust and electrical. Avoid a pre-92 auto transmission with the AOD auto 4 speed, they had big reliability issues.

Gas mileage is going to be terrible even in the straight 6 with a 5 speed. I’ve owned them with a 300, 302 and 351 the 300 engines ones I owned actually gave me the most problems as most assumed they lasted forever and then didn’t care for them at all.

Every one I’ve also owned has the key switch fail and I wired in a push button to trigger th e starter.

That being said they’re beasts, took a ton of load in the bed and towed well. In 4x4 they’d go anywhere and aren’t too large either.

For a beater truck that parts are everywhere and cheap it’s really hard to beat. They were better than the Chevy’s and Dodges of the era reliability wise and none of us can afford a used Toyota anymore.

They are not pleasant daily drivers though, ride rough unless loaded and get bad has mileage but they’re an excellent truck for work, hunting, hauling and so on. It’s definitely worth it to try to get one with little rust, it makes them much easier to work on.

My favorite one was an 89 F150 with the 302 and a 5 speed with Extended cab and 4x4. I loved that truck, ended up wrecking it. Most do anything was a 87 300 4x4 with a 4speed T18, that truck had lots of problems and was mostly rust and junkyard parts but it was a great wood hauling/hunting truck. In granny low and 4x4 low it would climb anything. But it didn’t have an overdrive so it didn’t like t o go over 65. It was also broke down more than it ran, but mostly due to the abuse it had suffered.

I’ve wanted another but here they’re all rust and I don’t want that. That post was a bit more long  winded than I anticipated.

Thanks for your input. Not particularly picky about engines but I'm looking for 94-96. It's going to be used as a hauler and occasional towing a side by side. Most driving it'll do is a 180 Mile trip to the Catskills.i think I'm gonna have to find one in the South

I’d go south if you can. My challenge with that has been getting people to seriously think I want to drive 5 hours to get a $1800 truck...

Also I’d recommend staying away from 96 trucks, they had ODBII grafted onto a truck that was never meant to have it so electronics g et strange and hard to find for the computer controlled stuff.

Happy hunting though!

Average sales price in my zipcode last month was 1.7MM. Condos are usually much less than that of course, houses can cost 8 figures. You can find “affordable” houses for under 500K out there, but you’ll get a 90+ minute each way commute for it.

Did my usual CL search today and clicked on this - properly optioned, period colors, not cheap but it looks solid, this is how they survive here if given some care:

You could probably get it for less, too, I am pretty sure I saw it listed a while back.

Housing wasn’t bad here 40 years ago. Places the lucky generation bought for 100K in 1985 can be 1.5MM today. Then half the country decided they wanted to live here, the tech industry boomed, along with this being a key destination for dirty foreign capital. Let the bidding wars commence.

Various cheaper (sometimes only slightly) squarebodies, notice what they are missing:

That is an actual truck I looked at, it was for sale with a plow on the roadside so I stopped to look. It was ok from 15 feet away.

Fun fact, I saw the same truck for sale months later “not running” by someone else in a different nearby town. Original list price $1,200 (I think) - then listed at “$700 just want it gone” by the next guy.

Ouch. But what did you expect?!
